On August 1, 1981 MTV changed the Music industry and without knowing it changed how we view visual information. By creating more edited cuts in shorter increments some might say the advent of the music video was when all of our attention spans started shortening. Others say it is proof that we can process information and understand what we are seeing in a much shorter amount of time.
30 years later you can hardly find a music video on MTV anymore but they continue to be one of the best formats for movie making today. The ease of sharing videos on the internet has made Music Video making accessible to just about everyone.
Besides showing us that editing can become a chaotic tool to bombard us with different visual information rapidly, it can also be used to create a beautiful marriage between audio and visual. The simple use of a song to inspire a short story, or visual narrative is a great way to start making a video if you have never tried before.
